Forced Labor and US Customs Seizures
Summary
In 2016 the TFTEA was passed, which (among other things) removed an old clause called the "Consumptive Demand" clause from 19 U.S.C.. As a result, goods produced by forced labor are subject to seizure by US Customs more so than in the past. There have been more seizures in 2016 already than in many years. The jury is out on how this will affect global trade...

Canadian Extraterritorial Export Controls?
Recently, the 2012 sale by Canadian company Streit of armoured vehicles to Libya and Sudan has sparked some lively debate on the limits of Canada's export controls. In light of some recent comments, and the fact that legislation is pending for fall 2016 to overhaul our current rules, we are wondering if we may see US style extraterritoriality in Canada's export controls. This would be ironic, in light of the Canadian Foreign Extraterritorial Measures Act, intended to block the reach of other countries with similar rules! We'll be watching this closely...
